RAP MUSIC: OVERT SEXUAL EXOTICISM
In perhaps the most overtly sexual genre of music, women in the Rap genre are explicitly formed into roles that make them sexual objects. Much like the pop genre of music, women in this genre use their sex appeal, coupled with sexual lyrics to gain media attention. These women are often paired with a man in their videos, and either are willing to please every one of his sexual desires, or they are aggressive in their sexual nature and sing about destroying other women who stand in their way of being with a man.
Women in this genre seem to have absolutely no regard for the image they are presenting to young women, and men, around the world. For women it sets of the idea of the double bind: be sexy and slutty, or be a prude and dominated by a man's sexual desire. For men, it simply reinforces that men are the provider and women are the provided, especially in sexual circumstances. |
VIDEO EXAMPLES:
NICKI MINAJ - "SUPERBASS"
Nicki Minaj - Super Bass Official Music Video HD by devilish-romeo In Nicki Minaj's "Superbass" we begin with the camera focused on Minaj's face and then flashes imagery of ice, money, pink cars, and images of a man's body. Nicki is shown with other women with their midriffs showing and sporting daisy-duke cutoff shorts that are unbuttoned. These women, and Nicki flaunt their bodies by shaking their breasts and butts. As if this isn't enough sexual imagery, the focus shifts to Nicki who enters a pink pool surrounded by men wherein she pours a pink cocktail over her breasts for one man who joins her here in the pool. Later, like exotic dancers, Minaj and her posse of women dance around men in a blacklight often raising their legs over them and rubbing them down seductively. The imagery here is so sexually charged, and so focused on that sexual energy that it detracts the viewer from the ultra-simple lyrics. |
IGGY AZALEA - "PU$$Y"If the name "Pu$$y" didn't alert you to what this music video is about, the imagery within will make sure you make sure you know. Iggy Azalea's video for "Pu$$y" uses sexual imagery like women eating dripping ice cream, crotch shots of women, and close ups of women licking their lips as explicit ways of reminding their audience that the song is indeed about vaginas and oral sex. Iggy's ability to be a talented rapper is overshadowed by her femininity and sex appeal that instead wish to represent her, again, as a sexual object. |
